ConOps and SORA

BVLOS operations

My recent work on developing a drone-in-a-box ConOp resulted in two BVLOS waivers from the FAA.

I was very happy to work with an interdisciplinary team consisting of Aerodyne Group (including US subsidiary, Aerodyne Measure), Iris Automation, FlytBase, and Hextronics, as well as our industry partner on a DIAB (drone-in-a-box) project.

With BVLOS being new to some of the partner companies (though very familiar to others), I started by adding significant structure to the training and operations, in order to help ensure the reliability and safety of the operations. My work revising existing operations manuals; developing new operations, safety, and training programs; and developing all new ConOps and SORA resulted in obtaining two BVLOS certificates of waiver from the FAA, one with visual observer (VO) and one without, the latter relying on Casia G for Detect and Alert. I’m proud to say, no RFIs – apparently, I included all needed information right off the bat. Efficient!

The industry use case includes:

  • Surveillance flights for an industrial property and facility
  • Imaging flights for autonomous analytical purposes

The BVLOS operations enable the facility to enhance its safety / security and its tracking of inventory.
